Pericoronitis Around a Third Molar/Wisdom Tooth: Here, you can see that the third molar, or wisdom tooth, has erupted into the mouth. Because the lower jaw is not large enough for the wisdom tooth to fit, there remains a flap of flabby cheek-like tissue around the back to the tooth and over the top. Debris and bacteria collects under this flap and an infection ensues. The obvious immediate treatment is to clean out the debris, prescribe amoxicillin and have the patient return after the infection is controlled to have the gum trimmed away or have to tooth extracted. Sometimes the gum can be trimmed and that is enough.
